La famille souche hante la démographie historique comme elle hante l'ethnologie québécoise, et tous ceux qui en parlent la définissent par la transmission indivise du patrimoine à un seul héritier. On l'explique donc en expliquant cette singularité, en invoquant ou la pression démographique, ou le désir d'assurer ses vieux jours. Dans une perspective comparative, toutefois, pression démographique et désir d'assurer ses vieux jours sont fréquents mais la famille souche ne l'est pas et, pour l'élucider, il faut chercher ailleurs, du côté de la composition résidentielle plutôt que de la transmission. Alors s'effritent tous les lieux communs que l'on a pu proférer à propos de la famille souche. On découvre désormais que les pratiques successorales dites typiques de la famille souche s'éclairent à la lumière d'une nouvelle question : pourquoi tolérer la corésidence de la bru ? Une comparaison historique met notre modèle au défi, puisque l'historiographie révèle des pratiques successorales fort différentes en Nouvelle‑France (Dechêne 1974). En comparant les pratiques successorales et résidentielles de la fin du XIXe siècle à celles du XVIle siècle nous concluons que la famille souche n'a pas pu exister au Québec francophone avant la première moitié du XIXe siècle, et nous suggérons une explication. The stem family has invaded historical demography as it has obsessed Quebec ethnography and all those who have studied it haved defined it in terms of impartible inheritance. Explanations of the stem family have therefore amounted to nothing also than explanations of impartible inheritance, either in terms of demographic pressures, or the need to secure old age support. In a comparative perspective, however, demographic pressures and the need for old age securities are widespread, but the stem family is not and, to understand its specificity we need to shift our attention to its residential composition. All the common wisdom statements about it then lose much of their plausibility. In this new perspective, the inheritance practices related to the stem family are best interpreted in the light of a new question : why should the parents tolerate the coresidence of their daughter‑inlaw ? At first glance, the historical evidence may seem to challenge our thesis, since historians have uncovered radically different inheritance practices in the seventeenth‑century. By a systematic comparison of residential and inheritance practices between the 19th and the 17th centuries, we conclude that the stem family could not have existed in francophone Quebec before the first half of the 19th century, and we explain why.
